ANZAC DAY IS A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

ANZAC Day 2019 will take place on Thursday, 25 April and is a time for the NSW community to come together and pay tribute to the first ANZACs and to all the brave servicemen and women who have since followed in their footsteps.

This year Sydney’s traditional ANZAC Day March through the CBD will run down Elizabeth Street to Liverpool Street, commencing at Martin Place. The Sydney CBD will again have four key commemorative events this ANZAC Day.


DAWN SERVICE

0415 - 0530hrs
Cenotaph, Martin Place

The official State Dawn Service is held at the Cenotaph in Martin Place. The Catafalque Party and Band march on at 0415hrs, the ceremony commences at 0430hrs which is believed to have been the approximate time at which the first Australians waded ashore at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915.

COMMEMORATION SERVICE

1230 - 1330hrs
Anzac Memorial, Hyde Park South

The ANZAC Commemoration Service is held at the Anzac Memorial, Hyde Park, adjacent to the Pool of Reflection, commencing at 1230hrs.

This service has developed into an impressive dedication, attended by the Governor of New South Wales, Premier of New South Wales, Leader of the Opposition, senior service representatives, invited guests and members of the community.

In recent years a United Drumhead Service has been introduced. This year support will be provided by cadets from The Scots College, the NSW Police Concert Band accompanied by the Sydney Welsh Choir.


SUNSET SERVICE

1700-1730hrs
Cenotaph, Martin Place

The ANZAC Day Sunset Service will start at the Cenotaph, Martin Place at 1700hrs.

This ceremony will be a short service accompanied by the NSW Ambulance Service Band and followed by the lowering of the flags.

The Sunset Service brings to a conclusion the official ANZAC Day Commemorations in Sydney.

Road Closures & Public Transport

Major road closures will be in place throughout Sydney CBD from 0200hrs and commence opening from 1600hrs.

Detailed information and maps of the road closures can be found at www.livetraffic.com 

Special event clearway parking restrictions will also be in effect on most major roads throughout the city from 0530 until 1600hrs, meaning street parking will be very limited. Clearways are strict no-parking zones and vehicles left in clearways will be towed and fee applies. If you vehicle is towed, call 132 701 to find its new location.

Buses to and from the city will be using alternate routes and stops between 0300 and 0400hrs while road closure are in place.

A temporary taxi rank will be located on Wentworth Avenue near Wemyss Lane during the road closures.

Public transport is free for members and ex-members of the Australian Defence Force in uniform or wearing their medals. This entitlement also applies to accompanying carers, family and widows of veterans who are carrying an accreditation letter from RSL NSW or present a war widow’s gold card.

Additional early morning train and bus services will be running and continue throughout the day.

  • Pitt Street approaching Market Street (eastern side, outside Piccadilly Shopping Centre)

Trading on ANZAC Day

Legislation in NSW prohibits most shops from opening before 1300hrs. Reputable real estate agents follow the Institute's guidance, which no-one should operate, do open homes or auctions before 1300hrs.


Wreath Laying at the Cenotaph

Units who wish to conduct a brief wreath-laying service at the Cenotaph on 24 & 25 April must apply via the RSL NSW website here and will be allocated a time in the schedule of events.
