State Secretary Newsletter – 12 December 2019

Dear Members,

RSL DefenceCare Christmas Appeal

As many of us look forward to time with loved ones over Christmas, please keep in mind those struggling through financial hardship and not enjoying the same festivities. RSL DefenceCare is running a Christmas appeal to raise funds for veterans and their families in this situation. To donate, please click here.

Sub-Branches affiliated with ADF units may wish to share the page with their contacts:

ADF Commemoration Support

The ADF has extended the deadline to request their support at ANZAC Day services in 2020. Requests are now due no later than this Friday, 13 December. To make a request, please download and complete the form (click here), then scan and send to

New Membership Form

Sub-Branch honorary secretaries should be aware an updated form for new membership applications is now available on the RSL NSW website (click here). This new form is consistent with our new constitution, and any remaining copies of the old version should now be destroyed.

Please note that, as always, prospective members should go through their local sub-Branch to become a member. And of course, this new membership form does not apply for renewals, which will now operate under a new process as outlined in Circular C11/19 of 1 October.

A reminder also that new membership applications should be sent to ANZAC House including the correct capitation fee (currently $25.00) to ensure they are processed as quickly as possible. We continue to receive applications with incorrect fees, which slows down the process considerably.

2019 Annual Returns

Annual returns for 2019 (for sub-Branches, auxiliaries, district councils and youth clubs) are still being finalised, and honorary secretaries can expect them to be available in the Members’ Suite of the RSL NSW website by mid-next week, if not sooner. Thank you for your patience.

RSL Custodian

We have now set up a dedicated email address for those sub-Branches that have RSL Custodian Pty Ltd as a trustee. All matters involving Custodian should now be sent exclusively to This dedicated address is a first step in a new effort to streamline the process.

ANZAC House Christmas Shutdown

All members please note ANZAC House will be closed for Christmas from next Friday, 20 December till Monday, 6 January. Across that period, your emails will still be received, but not actioned until staff return.

This will be my last newsletter of the year. Given the gentle saunter of a sub-Branch January, you can expect the next issue on Wednesday, 6 February.

The veteran community knows Christmas can be a time of significant pain for some of us—including our family members. As at any time of year, please be aware of the following contacts if you or someone else needs urgent help:

  • Lifeline 13 11 14
  • Open Arms 1800 011 046
  • and if someone’s life is in danger, always call 000

Thank you all for your hard work, commitment and endurance this year. The team at ANZAC House wish you all the best for Christmas and the new year, and look forward to working with you in 2020 as we turn our League to more productive matters.

And thank you for reading,

Jeff O’Brien
State Secretary
