State Secretary Newsletter – 2 October 2019

Dear Members,

Countdown to Congress

Over the past week, most sub-Branches will have begun holding their final meeting before congress. I wish members good luck in making their decisions on the constitution and draft standard operating procedures (SOPs) they have now been considering for several months. I hope the improved communication and consultation processes this year have given you confidence and helped to dispel doubt.

All sub-Branches and District Councils should remember to register for congress by Thursday, 17 October through our website (click here). If you need help please contact the Support Unit at support@rslnsw.org.au or 1300 679 775. As always, financial assistance is available for those requiring it to make the trip to Albury—this is possible due to the generosity of our sub-Branches themselves.

Readers of this newsletter will be familiar with the District Council video interviews being posted regularly on the RSL NSW website and Facebook page. Most recently we heard from Christine Dartnell and Greg Salmon MM of Riverina and Western district councils respectively. Today is Bill Hardman OAM, President of Northern Beaches District Council, who was heavily engaged in drafting the SOPs as a member of the DC7 sub-committee elected by the full District Council forum in April.

Annual Report

Last week we published our first annual report since 2015, which included an overview of the activities and financial results of ANZAC House in the financial year 2018-19, while highlighting some great work from members and sub-Branches. This report should be read in conjunction with the full financial statements, both now available on the RSL NSW website (click here).

A hard copy of the report will be available for each sub-Branch at congress. Delegates will have the opportunity to ask the Treasurer questions about the financial statements; any such questions should be emailed to the Support Unit well before 27 October to ensure substantive answers can be prepared.

Wreaths and Funeral Poppies

Remembrance Day is approaching quickly and sub-Branches can now purchase commemorative wreaths and funeral poppies by contacting the Support Unit at support@rslnsw.org.au or 1300 679 775.

Sub-Branch Budgets

Sub-Branch budget forms for 2020 are also now available in the Members’ Suite of the RSL NSW website (click here). They should be submitted by email to the Support Unit by 30 November.

New Process for Membership Renewals

A circular (C11/19) was emailed to all sub-Branch Honorary Secretaries yesterday detailing a simplified process for upcoming membership renewals. In short, sub-Branches will collect the full annual subscription fee ($35) from each of their members, and ANZAC House will invoice the sub-Branch for the the total capitation fee payable. This will consolidate tens of thousands of transactions and so slash the administrative workload generated by membership renewals at both the sub-Branch and State Branch level.

Thank you for reading,

Jeff O’Brien

State Secretary
